Argireline is a trade name. On an ingredient list the molecule appears as acetyl hexapeptide-8, and on older packaging as the retired acetyl hexapeptide-3. Both names sit on one PubChem compound record, with acetyl hexapeptide-8 tagged as the INCI name. The chain is six amino acids, Ac-Glu-Glu-Met-Gln-Arg-Arg-NH2. A serum can contain it without the word Argireline appearing anywhere on the box.
What the label actually calls it
SNAP-8 is a trade name too. The INCI name is acetyl octapeptide-3, and PubChem carries SNAP-8 on that same record as a trade mark rather than a chemical name. The chain is eight amino acids, Ac-Glu-Glu-Met-Gln-Arg-Arg-Ala-Asp-NH2. Same rule applies: the trade name is what the marketing uses, and the INCI name is the only thing on the label that tells you the ingredient is in there.
Lipotec, of Barcelona. The 2025 review in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences attributes the Argireline trade name to that company, and the 2025 review in Polymers names Lipotec S.A. as the marketer. The 2002 paper that introduced the molecule was written by the group that designed it.
Who developed each one
Lipotec again, and this is the fact the head-to-head framing hides. The 2025 Polymers review states it plainly: acetyl octapeptide-3 comes from Lipotec S.A., Barcelona, and is made by adding two residues, alanine and aspartate, to the acetyl hexapeptide-3 structure. SNAP-8 is not a rival to Argireline. It is the same company's follow-up to it.
Up to 30 percent less wrinkle depth over 30 days. That figure traces to a single paper: Blanes-Mira and colleagues, International Journal of Cosmetic Science, 2002, testing an oil in water emulsion carrying the peptide at 10 percent on healthy women volunteers. It went through peer review. It was also written by the team that created the molecule.
The headline number, and whose number it is
A maximum near 62 percent, with a mean nearer 35 percent. This one never went through peer review at all. The 2020 review in Frontiers in Chemistry reports both figures and says exactly where they came from: the data available on the manufacturer's website. The mean is the number vendor copy tends to leave out.
No, and the reason is arithmetic rather than chemistry. The Argireline figure is a peer-reviewed maximum from a 30-day study, on one group of volunteers, using the measurement method that paper chose, at a concentration the paper states.
Is the comparison between those two numbers valid
The SNAP-8 figure is a manufacturer maximum from a source the reviewing academics could only describe as a website. Different study, different volunteers, different method, undisclosed conditions. Two maxima produced by two different processes are not a ranking, and stacking them side by side manufactures a comparison nobody ran.
Thin, but it exists. Wang and colleagues ran a randomized placebo-controlled trial in 60 Chinese subjects, 3 to 1 active against placebo, over four weeks, published in the American Journal of Clinical Dermatology in 2013; total anti-wrinkle efficacy came out at 48.9 percent against 0 percent for placebo. A team at the NIH neurological institute ran a double-blind placebo-controlled pilot in 24 patients already on botulinum toxin therapy, published in the European Journal of Neurology the same year.

Independent human evidence
Effectively none isolating the molecule. A PubMed search for acetyl octapeptide-3 returns two clinical papers. Both test microneedle patches carrying several actives at once, one alongside hyaluronic acid and two other ingredients, the other alongside four. Both carry authors from the company that makes the patch. Neither measures what the peptide does on its own, which is the question a shopper is actually asking.
None. Whatever a product page says about one outperforming the other, no published trial has put both on comparable faces under comparable conditions and measured them against each other.
Head-to-head trials between the two
None. The claim that SNAP-8 is some specific percentage more active than Argireline circulates widely in seller copy. It is assembled from figures produced separately, by the company that sells both, and it has never been tested by an outside group.
Both are read as fragments of SNAP-25 competing for a place in the SNARE complex, the machinery a nerve ending uses to release acetylcholine. Argireline covers the N-terminal domain of that protein. The 2025 International Journal of Molecular Sciences review states that none of the in vivo application studies it surveyed confirmed the peptide inhibiting muscle contraction.
Proposed mechanism
The same story with two extra residues. The 2020 Frontiers in Chemistry review describes SNAP-8 mimicking SNAP-25 as a competitive inhibitor, with its inhibition figures measured in a cell assay rather than on skin. That distinction matters, because a molecule can behave in a dish and still never reach the place it would need to reach.
Measured, and the answer is discouraging. Kraeling and colleagues at the FDA published an in vitro study in 2015 using a cosmetic oil in water emulsion on human cadaver skin over 24 hours. Of the peptide recovered, 0.22 percent stayed in the stratum corneum and 0.01 percent reached the epidermis. None was detected in the receptor fluid.
Does it get far enough into skin
Not measured independently at all. No government-lab penetration study exists, and the 2020 Frontiers in Chemistry review reports no permeation figure for it. SNAP-8 is two amino acids longer than Argireline and shares its water-loving character, so the delivery problem is at least as hard. That is reasoning, though, not data.
There is a published answer, and it is uncomfortable. When the Expert Panel for Cosmetic Ingredient Safety reviewed industry-reported use data and published its assessment in the International Journal of Toxicology in 2025, it concluded that acetyl hexapeptide-8 amide is safe in cosmetics at concentrations up to 0.005 percent, and that the available data were not sufficient above that. The studies behind the famous figure ran at 10 percent.
Concentration in what you can actually buy
No equivalent panel assessment has been published. Nothing in the peer-reviewed record tells you what concentration finished SNAP-8 products carry, and nothing tells you what that concentration does. The manufacturer figures arrived without the methodological detail that would let anyone check them, so SNAP-8 has the same concentration gap Argireline has, minus the published number that describes it.
Topical cosmetic use is generally reported as well tolerated. The Expert Panel noted an absence of systemic toxicity data but was satisfied by the peptide structure, the very low log P of -6.3 suggesting percutaneous absorption is unlikely, and the low use concentration. Ordinary leave-on risks still apply: localized irritation, redness, or contact sensitivity to the peptide or anything else in the formula.
Reported side effects, topical
The same general picture with less behind it. The two published clinical papers describe their multi-ingredient patches as well tolerated with no adverse effects reported, which says something about those patches rather than about the peptide. No published safety-panel assessment covers acetyl octapeptide-3, so the reassurance rests on category reasoning rather than on a review of real use data.
There is a published harm signal. A 2021 case report in World Journal of Clinical Cases describes a woman who developed erythema, nodules, and abscesses a week after facial injections of argireline, with pus cultures positive for Mycobacterium abscessus and five months of antibiotics before she improved. One case is one case. It is still one more than the injectable route has efficacy data for.
The injectable question
No comparable case report turns up in PubMed, and no efficacy data for the route exists either. An absence of published cases is not a safety finding; it is what a smaller and newer gray market looks like in the literature. Both molecules were designed and sold as topical cosmetics, and gray-market vials sit outside the cosmetic safety review entirely.

Neither name is on the current WADA Prohibited List, though athletes should check the list for their own sport and season.
Regulatory status
Identical. A cosmetic ingredient, not FDA-approved as a drug, with no efficacy finding to inherit. Raw powder sold for laboratory research sits outside the cosmetic safety review, and nothing about the cosmetic route carries over to it.
A 2024 longitudinal analysis in JMIR Dermatology tracked United States search interest from 2013 to 2023 and found people searched overwhelmingly for the trade name first and the Botox in a bottle nickname second, with the two scientific names flat along the bottom. Interest was sparse before 2015, climbed from May 2021, and peaked in October 2022.
How people actually shop for these
No equivalent analysis has been published for SNAP-8, but the lesson carries over. People shop by trade name, and the trade name is the part of a label that tells you nothing about how much of the ingredient is in the bottle. The INCI name is the part that does, and it is printed in the smallest type on the package.
An independent, adequately powered, randomized split-face trial at the concentrations finished products carry, measuring both peptides against each other and against vehicle. More than twenty years after the origin paper, nobody has run it.
What would actually settle this
The same trial. Until it exists, choosing between these two on efficacy grounds means choosing between a peer-reviewed number from the developer and an unreviewed number from the developer's website. Neither is a reason. Price, the rest of the formula, and how your skin tolerates the bottle are the variables you can actually observe.
